Racism: Teaching Kids About Racism
Through all the previous blogs you already know Racism is a complex and difficult subject to address but that's also the reason why it is important to start speaking to children at a young age. Think about it Children are often aware of racial differences early on, and they can begin to ask questions about race and racism. So It is important, to be honest, and open with your kids about these topics and to teach them about the history of racism in our society which will help them later in their life.
some tips on how to teach kids about racism:
1. First start with discussing the idea of race. Explain to the children that race is a social construct and that there is no scientific foundation to separate people into different races.
2. Racism can be a tough concept to teach kids
But just like when we were kids if taught through the stories they might understand the moral values through it.
So, Tell them the real tale of racism within our society. Educate children about how racism has served to justify slavery, segregation, and other forms of discrimination in the past.
3. Educate children on different forms of racism.
Racism may come in many forms, including:
*Individual Racism: Refers to a person who treats a person differently based on their race.
*Institutional racism: It is when institutions, like schools and businesses, discriminate against people of colour.
*Systemic Racism: This is where racism is embedded in the fabric of our society so that it benefits white people and disadvantages people of colour.
Kids will never be fully knowledgeable of racism because they might never experience its impact. Racism can deeply impact people's lives. It can result in prejudice, brutality, or even death.
* Educate children to be anti-racist. Explain to kids that they can help to fight racism by being allies to people of colour. They can also contribute to increasing awareness of racism and challenging racist ideas by telling their friends.
It is important to be patient and age-friendly when speaking to children about racism. You may have to repeat yourself over and over again and use different/easy words and examples depending on the child's age and understanding.
Some kid-friendly books that can help you teach kids about racism:
* **Books: **
1 ."Anti-Racist Baby" by Ibram X. Kendi
2. Something Happened in Our Town" by Pat Mora
3. "The Color of Us" by Karen Katz
It might feel like I am repeating myself but it can be tough to tell your children about racism, but it is important to do so. By sensitizing kids to racism from an earlier age, we can support them to grow awareness of the environment around them and fight racism.
